Gua Sha, also known as “scraping therapy” or “skin scraping,” is an ancient healing practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves gently scraping the skin with a flat, smooth-edged tool to stimulate the flow of blood, Qi (vital energy), and lymph. The term “Gua” means “to scrape,” while “Sha” refers to the red or purple spots that appear on the skin surface due to the scraping. These minor bruises, known as petechiae and ecchymoses, typically clear out in 2-5 days, with symptoms alleviating immediately or shortly after treatment.
Moxa heat is transmitted to the deep layers of the skin and muscles via polymodal receptors (PRs) of heat-sensitive acupoints. This ‘Yang’ treatment warms Meridian channels and stimulates Qi circulation.
A smooth-edged tool, often made of jade or other materials, is used to scrape the skin in a specific manner. The tool is typically positioned 1-2 inches above the skin at chosen acupuncture points for 30-40 minutes. This increases peripheral arterial blood flow and micro-vascular permeability, which appears as a pinkish flush on the skin.
