Moxibustion is a thermal treatment that uses the medical herb Artemisia, or Mugwort (艾草). It is popular for conditions such as breech birth and menstrual cramps due to its non-invasive and natural approach. Often, it is combined with acupuncture.
Moxa heat is transmitted to the deep layers of the skin and muscles via polymodal receptors (PRs) of heat-sensitive acupoints. This ‘Yang’ treatment warms Meridian channels and stimulates Qi circulation.
Mugwort is burnt and positioned 1-2 inches above the skin at chosen acupuncture points for 30-40 minutes. This increases peripheral arterial blood flow and micro-vascular permeability, which appears as a pinkish flush on the skin.
